আর তারা যখন ঈমানদারদের সাথে মিশে, তখন বলে, আমরা ঈমান এনেছি। আবার যখন তাদের শয়তানদের সাথে একান্তে সাক্ষাৎ করে, তখন বলে, আমরা তোমাদের সাথে রয়েছি। আমরা তো (মুসলমানদের সাথে) উপহাস করি মাত্রা।
And when they meet those who believe, they say: ”We believe,” but when they are alone with their Shayâtin (devils – polytheists, hypocrites, etc.), they say: ”Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking.”

وَإِذَا لَقُواْ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ قَالُواْ آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْاْ إِلَى شَيَاطِينِهِمْ قَالُواْ إِنَّا مَعَكْمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِؤُونَ
Wa-itha laqoo allatheena amanoo qaloo amanna wa-itha khalaw ila shayateenihim qaloo inna maAAakum innama nahnu mustahzi-oona

YUSUFALI: When they meet those who believe, they say: “We believe;” but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: “We are really with you: We (were) only jesting.”
PICKTHAL: And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.
SHAKIR: And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking.
KHALIFA: When they meet the believers, they say, “We believe,” but when alone with their devils, they say, “We are with you; we were only mocking.”

১৪। যখন তারা বিশ্বাসীদের সাথে মিলিত হয়, তারা বলে, ৩৭ ‘আমরা ঈমান এনেছি।’ কিন্তু যখন তারা নিভৃতে শয়তান [লোকদের] সাথে মিলিত হয়, তারা বলে; ‘আমরা প্রকৃতই তোমাদের সাথে, আমরা কেবলমাত্র ঠাট্টা-তামাশা করেছিলাম।

৩৭। মুনাফেকী যখন অন্তরের অন্তঃস্থলে গভীরভাবে তার শিকড় বিস্তার করে, তখন তারা হয়ে উঠে অত্যন্ত কপট ও ভণ্ড। মুখে মধু ঢেলে তারা ধার্মিক লোকদের সাথে একাত্মতা প্রকাশ করে যেনো তাদের প্রকৃতরূপ বিশ্ববাসীরা অনুধাবন করতে না পারে। কিন্তু যখন তারা স্বগোত্রে প্রত্যাবর্তন করে তখন নিজমূর্তি ধারণ করে। কিন্তু কপটতা, ভণ্ডামীর পরিণতি কখনও ভালো হয় না। একে আল্লাহ্‌ তুলনা করেছেন সেই লোকের সাথে যে তার বাণিজ্যে মুনাফা লাভের পরিবর্তে লোকসান দিয়েছে। কারণ এই পৃথিবীতে আমাদের অবস্থান খুবই ক্ষণস্থায়ী। এই ক্ষণস্থায়ী পৃথিবীতে আমরা এসেছি বেহেশ্‌ত লাভের বাণিজ্যে। আত্মা তার মূলধন। এই মূলধনকে যে উন্নত করতে পারবে তারই আছে মুনাফা। অন্যথায় যে আত্মাকে লোভ-লালসা, অন্যায়, অসত্যের কাছে বিক্রি করে সে ঐ ব্যক্তির মত যে বাণিজ্যে লোকসান দেয়।
